書中講的是兩個(gè)女孩因?yàn)榧抑凶钚〉拿妹猛蝗凰廊ズ笕蚁萑肓松钌畹谋粗?，小妹也不再開口說話了，家中一片混亂。
她們的姨媽派蒂，為了心力交瘁的妹妹能得到安靜的修養(yǎng)。
決定把兩個(gè)女孩帶到自己的家里去住一段時(shí)間。
可讓派蒂姨媽萬萬沒想到，這兩個(gè)女孩與派蒂姨媽格格不入。
還好有寬厚溫和的霍伯姨父巧妙的周旋在姨媽和兩個(gè)女孩之間，才使得原以火藥味十足的緊張氣氛得以緩解，后來派蒂姨媽終于讀懂了兩個(gè)孩子的心，而這兩個(gè)孩子也不再怨恨她們的姨媽了。
小妹又開口說話了。
兩個(gè)女孩盼望著能早日回到媽媽的懷抱，而這一天已經(jīng)到來。

讀書讓我明白了，人在遭遇不幸和痛苦時(shí)，我們要“適時(shí)地學(xué)會(huì)坦然無懼地流淚”否則就“永遠(yuǎn)無法真正了解那些發(fā)自深處的祈禱和歡笑”無法坦城地表達(dá)自己的痛苦與愛。
故事中兩個(gè)女孩開始不理解派蒂姨媽的用心良苦，是因?yàn)橐虌尶偸钦驹谧约旱牧?chǎng)上去看別人，但是后來她們坦誠的表達(dá)了自己的痛苦與愛，化解了對(duì)方心中的怨恨。
