從這個(gè)目的出發(fā),小說深刻地揭露了法國大革命前深深激化了的社會(huì)矛盾,強(qiáng)烈地抨擊貴族階級的荒淫殘暴,并深切地同情下層人民的苦難。作品尖銳地指出,人民群眾的忍耐是有限度的,在貴族階級的殘暴統(tǒng)治下,人民群眾迫于生計(jì),必然奮起反抗。這種反抗是正義的。小說還描繪了起義人民攻擊巴士底獄等壯觀場景,表現(xiàn)了人民群眾的偉大力量。然而,作者站在資產(chǎn)階級人道主義的立場上,即反對殘酷壓迫人民的暴政,也反對革命人民反抗暴政的暴力。在狄更斯筆下,整個(gè)革命被描寫成一場毀滅一切的巨大災(zāi)難,它無情地懲罰罪惡的貴族階級,也盲目地殺害無辜的人們。

對于當(dāng)時(shí)那場發(fā)生在巴黎的轟轟烈烈的大革命,太多人花了太多的筆墨去描述它。這對法國來說是一場具有重大意義的轉(zhuǎn)變,甚至對于歐洲,對于整個(gè)世界來說也是如此。作者狄更斯,是英國最杰出的現(xiàn)實(shí)主義批判作家之一。雖然他沒有親眼目睹,卻依靠自己豐富的想象力看到的當(dāng)時(shí)的景象。

有人說,《雙城記》是描寫了兩個(gè)男人和一個(gè)女人的故事,我卻覺得,這樣說的人必定沒有了解作者真正想表達(dá)的意圖。如果只是表達(dá)了這個(gè),任何一部作品都可以達(dá)到露西和查爾斯的水準(zhǔn),那么《雙城記》的優(yōu)勢怎么體現(xiàn)出來呢?在我看來,德發(fā)奇一家和法國貴族的仇恨也好,露西、查爾斯和西德尼的感情問題也好,都是為了體現(xiàn)一個(gè)共同的主題而設(shè)的。這個(gè)主題就是剖析這場大革命與民眾之間的關(guān)系,看到底是什么引發(fā)了這場革命,到底這場血雨腥風(fēng)給人們帶來了什么。我想這才是作者想要表達(dá)的重心所在。
