排燈節(jié)(Diwali Festival)是印度教的重要節(jié)日。為了迎接排燈節(jié)，印度的家家戶戶都會點亮蠟燭或油燈，因為它們象征著光明、繁榮和幸福[2] 。
在每年印度舊歷的最后一天(相當于公歷10月前后的某一天)，煙火和各種節(jié)日的燈會照亮黑暗的夜晚，這是全世界約10億印度教信徒在慶祝排燈節(jié)——一個燈的節(jié)日。這是世界上最廣泛慶祝的節(jié)日之一，在印度、斐濟、尼泊爾和特立尼達島，它甚至是全國性的節(jié)日。
慶祝排燈節(jié)的理由各地不同。印度北方是為了慶祝印度教神祇羅摩率領(lǐng)的戰(zhàn)士從斯里蘭卡歸國;南方則是為了紀念魔王那拉卡蘇拉被神主克利斯納懲殺。盡管關(guān)于排燈節(jié)的由來各地眾說紛紜，不過多數(shù)人都同意，持續(xù)五天的排燈節(jié)，旨在慶祝善行戰(zhàn)勝邪惡、光明擊退黑暗、知識打倒無知。
排燈節(jié)雖然屬于印度教節(jié)日，但對耆那教與錫克教來說也算大日子，印度人視為一年中最重要的節(jié)慶，重要性就像圣誕節(jié)與新年一樣。
由于排燈節(jié)是象征人性光明打敗黑暗，在印度教中屬于最友愛，最愉快的慶典之一，就連印度北部旁遮普省，靠近世仇巴基斯坦的邊境都充滿愛的氣氛，雙方的邊境守軍難得卸下武裝，握手擁抱還交換甜點。不過排燈節(jié)的重頭戲還是在晚上。無論在印度或巴基斯坦，甚至在杜拜，只要是印度教的廟宇，都大排長龍，善男信女都來點燈祈福，交換禮物，到處施放煙火，氣氛熱鬧，就算不是印度教信徒，也以開放的心胸參加這場盛會。
由于這個節(jié)日也被視為財富女神希拉什米的節(jié)日，家家戶戶都會打掃清潔，點燃蠟燭與油燈，等著女神大駕光臨。
東印度的孟加拉人與西印度的古吉拉特人，都會在這一天祭祀代表繁榮與富裕的女神拉希米。
排燈節(jié)期間，印度所有公司行號暫停營業(yè)，但股市會有一天進行一小時的特別交易，作為呈給拉希米的獻禮。
印度教徒有在“排燈節(jié)”贈送禮物的習慣。鍍銅的蠟燭臺挑著一個貼有金屬皮的蠟燭，是人們送禮的熱門貨。當然，最受歡迎的還是印度的象首神加內(nèi)什。在“排燈節(jié)”里，糖果扮演了很重要的角色。在節(jié)日里，親戚朋友之間會互送稱做“巴菲”的彩色椰子糖，表示對對方的祝福。
多數(shù)印度家庭會在排燈節(jié)期間穿新衣、戴珠寶，拜訪家庭成員與公司同事，致贈甜食、干果、禮物。
